Print Culture & Calling Card Etiquette in the Time of Jane Austen

Giving and receiving visiting cards was essential to Regency social etiquette. Using Persuasion as an example Sarah J. Makowski, author of Bitches in Bonnets: Life Lessons from Jane Austen’s Mean Girls, will explore Austen's depictions of their use (and abuse) in communication and maintaining social hierarchies. Typography expert Manfred Makowski will then demonstrate the creation of authentic replica cards, including video footage from his letterpress studio. Participants can examine various traditional print materials, movable type, decorative elements, and tools. Each participant will receive a hand-printed souvenir calling card to keep for Austen’s 250th birthday.

Virtual Talk: How Box Hill Makes Mean Girls of Us All

Jane Austen Society, England, Northern Branch

Emma Woodhouse is far from a flawless heroine. In Jane Austen’s portrayal of the spoiled rich girl’s defensive behaviour towards the new girl in town, she teaches us that black is never truly black, and white is often just a shade of grey.
